Drain Cleaning Solutions

Commercial drain cleaners are among the most hazardous cleaning products in the home. Many contain ingredients like sodium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite (bleach) that can burn skin and eyes on contact. A single drop to the eye can cause damage.

The first line of defense is to prevent drains from becoming clogged in the first place. Install a simple drain screen, found at your local hardware store, to trap hair and other particles.

When a clog occurs, many experts recommend against using corrosive drain cleaners because of the sheer health risks they pose to humans. In fact, they say 90% of the time, a plunger or Kleer Drain will take care of the problem. If that doesn’t do it, a snake or auger will take care of the rest. SET UP YOUR Green Home RECYCLING CENTER!

You’ve said it a million times: “throw it away.”

It’s time to change your choice of words, because the truth is, there’s no such thing as “away.” All of our garbage is sent to landfills. Within the next 5 years, half of the landfills in current operation will either be shut down because they are simply full or leak toxic material into streams, lakes or aquifers, according to the EPA.

Quick Facts:

*Americans dump more than 21 million shopping bags full of food into landfills every year.

*Americans use an estimated 2.5 million  plastic bottles every hour, of which only a small portion gets recycled.

*Styrofoam can take about 500 years to  break down in a landfill.

*1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine  mammals are killed annually from eating or being strangled by plastic.

*There is six times more plastic floating  in our oceans than plankton.

Simple Action Steps:

*Put two trash bins in your kitchen, utility room and or garage. Label one “trash” and the other • “recycling.” Find out from your city what is recycled and what is not.

*Be conscious of your behavior. Consume less, reuse and fix items. This one tip will also put money  back in your pocket!

*Set up a third bin in your utility room or garage and designate it as the “donation box.” Place all  unwanted clothes, housewares, toys, and unwanted items in this bin to be donated.

*Recycle everything from clothes to soda cans.

*Close the loop: purchase products made from recycled materials.

The Green Home Fabric Softener
Add ¼ cup distilled white vinegar to your washing machine’s fabric-softener dispenser. Vinegar softens clothes, assists in eliminating static cling, and whitens and brightens. No vinegar smell is left behind.
Conventional Dryer Sheet Know How
Buyer beware. If you are using plastic dryer balls that claim to be earth-friendly because “they soften fabrics without chemicals,” think twice. The balls are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), one of the most toxic and least recyclable plastics. The PVC manufacturing process releases carcinogenic dioxins and contain phthalates.
Another risk is that children or pets might view these plastic balls as an attractive toy – kids and pets might be tempted to put them in their mouth.
